History of the Horse Patrol

The roots of the Vermont Mounted Response Unit date back to 1979, when commanding officer Capt. Grant Mitchell began training horses as service mounts following a call from the county Sheriff.

The Vermont Mounted Response Unit in its current form began as a volunteer organization in the spring of 2004 with a single ranger and police horse. Since then the unit has grown into an elite team of highly trained rangers and police mounts capable of addressing multiple situations around the state simultaneously.
